A Reception Area that Heals
February 15, 2018 | Good Primary Care
The bright sun and the fireplace warmed the reception area on a December afternoon. Yvetta had an appointment for pain management with her care team — her doctor, Health Coach and behavioral health specialist. As always she arrived about fifteen minutes early. Held up by her crutches and wincing with every step, Yvetta expressed that she was having a bad day. “I’m in so much pain,” she told me.
While the pain overwhelmed her, she explained to me how she deeply missed volunteering as a mentor at a local elementary school. She reminisced about teaching her students the songs from “Sound of Music.”
With our reception area speakers, I started playing “The Hills are Alive” from the “Sound of Music” soundtrack. Placing her crutches on the chair next to her, Yvetta stood up and sang with a whole-hearted energy I hadn’t seen before. Her voice and radiating smile filled the room with an amazing energy—a healing energy.
A few minutes later, her Health Coach came out to take her back for her visit and asked, “Are you ready?” Yvetta looked around, realizing she was standing up unassisted, she said “I don’t remember why I’m here—my pain is gone.”
At Iora Primary Care, we have the time and the space to change people’s lives starting from the moment they walk through the front door. We have the opportunity to welcome patients to our practices with conversations—and even music! Our approach to primary care and our space design allow us to learn about who our patients are and what makes them unique. We find out what they enjoy doing and tailor our care to meet not only their clinical needs but also their life goals.
At other doctor’s offices, patients arrive to impersonal waiting rooms. At Iora Primary Care, we welcome you with a reception area—a reception area that heals.
